Breville Boss
A few weeks ago, Breville hosted a giveaway for a Breville BOSS blender and a copy of the popular 101 Smoothie Recipes book by Joe Cross and….. I won!
Ever since, we have been enjoying smoothies, frozen icees, cool treats and more with my Breville BOSS blender.
Since school has been out, our summer has been busy and hot so far. To stay cool, we have been making homemade frozen pops, smoothies and other cool treats along side a lot of pool time.
I don’t think I am the only one that is ready for school to start back so we can get back in routine. Over the summer, we have had our fair share of eating out at restaurants and not cooking at home. My budget has certainly seen the difference of our new summer time routine and is screaming for a change.
Breville put up a blurb on their Facebook page awhile back asking for comments on favorite smoothie recipes. I have always been somewhat of a traditional type of gal, so I posted my no fail “strawberry banana” smoothie flavor as my comment. Breville’s need for comments on Facebook came with a unique twist because they were giving away a Breville Boss blender to one lucky comment along with a copy of Joe Cross’ 101 Smoothie Recipes
book! I thought I might give it a chance so I typed in my old smoothie recipe go to and guess what…. I won!
Here I am holding the box after getting home from work. While I was at work, my husband text me to say that I had a delivery from FedEx in a large box. I was so excited to get a picture to show you that I totally forgot to take off my work badge in this picture! I have been so happy with this little blender that I wanted to write an impromptu review of it to share how this blender has been useful in The Hot Mess Kitchen.
Sarah’s Frozen Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe
-
1 c bananas
-
1 c frozen strawberries
-
1/2 c vanilla yogurt
-
1 tbsp honey
-
1/4 c water (or sub 1/4 cup 2%milk)
-
1 c ice cubes
Add ingredients to your blender starting with the liquid ingredients first. Water, yogurt, honey, ice cubes and then frozen fruit. Blend using the “Smoothie” button on the Breville BOSS blender until smooth. This treat is a thick consistency and becomes creamy and smooth as the ice melts making it perfect to drink with a straw!
I would recommend a copy of the 101 Smoothie Recipes book by Joe Cross to any smoothie enthusiast. I was shocked to learn all of the different ingredients that you can put in a smoothie and the health benefits you will reap in return. Did you know that you can FREEZE bananas? I had no clue until reading about it in the 101 Smoothies Recipes book. The smoothies in this book are color coded for Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple, and Chocolate. Every recipe includes measurements and ingredients along with serving size. You can’t mess up when making a smoothie using this book.
Let me tell you a little about this blender. But, before I do I should probably mention the current state of my previous blender. It is barely hanging on by a thread. And by thread, I mean the plastic threaded gear on the bottom that spins the darn thing. We’ve used it so much that the gear piece has basically worn down. It was a brand you can find at any Bed, Bath & Beyond or Target store and was one if the higher end appliances. I had mainly used it for smoothies and margaritas, not really reaching the full potential of what the right blender can really do in the kitchen. I did not get the warranty on our other blender because of its initial price. I figured I could get a replacement by the time it wore out. We have had it for years and to give credit where credit is due, it has honestly taken awhile to wear it down.
Before the giveaway, I knew little about the Breville products. Outside of seeing them on the shelves at William & Sonoma, my only other experience was a comparison to the Breville from some other brand in Costco when the blender guy whips up chicken tortilla soup.
I must say that this blender is more than just a blender. Once I opened the box and saw the quality of the materials used to make it, it quickly put my little budget blender to shame. Included was a book that gives information on more things you can make including green smoothies, hot soups, ground spices, butter, sauces, pastes, cocktails and dips. Even with all of the things you can make, my most favorite function of the Breville BOSS is the self clean cycle. You heard me right. This thing cleans itself. Happy Dance.
I have made lots of neat things so far with the Breville BOSS, mostly including frozen treats since it is really too hot outside to do anything along the lines of soup just yet. We’ve made smoothies, chocolate milk shakes, margaritas (for the adults), and even the kids favorite which is snow cones. The ice gets crushed to such a fine consistency that it rivals any carnival snow cone treat. Now we can make them whenever we want at fractions of the cost.
Some of the things that I want to make are:
apple sauce
homemade mayo
ground spices
homemade ice cream
Going back to that auto clean cycle because it has encouraged me to use this blender more often, it really is easy to get this thing clean after making so many things in it. My old blender was one that you had to take apart and clean. Going from one task to the other was not possible because it took too much time to clean. With the auto clean cycle on the Breville BOSS, you literally fill up to the 2 cup line and add a few drops of liquid soap and go! You will get a heated tornado of cleaning water spinning throughout the blender as it cleans all of the blades. I have no fear in getting cut any more when trying to take something apart to clean it because it’s jut not necessary.
Here are the things I like the most about the BOSS:
sturdy base
BPA free plastics
heavy-duty materials
easy to use with a book that tells you exactly how to maintain your blender
comes with blender sticks to move around pieces of ice or frozen fruit during the blend cycle
Here are some of the treats we have made using the Breville BOSS…
I have enjoyed whipping up cool treats this summer and look forward to making a few hot soup recipes this fall. Stay tuned to see what else we can do with the Breville BOSS blender in The Hot Mess Kitchen!
Until the next Hot Mess……
