Have I told you about the time that I put aromatherapy grade essential oil in my mouth? No? I probably should tell you now that I have done some major research in using essential oils for things like cooking. In fact, I learned so much that I even decided to become a Young Living Independent Distributor so that I could share my oil stories with my friends, family and with you!
A few years back I had an abscessed tooth that caused one side of my face to swell up. It was incredibly painful. Not to mention I suffer from fear of even mentioning the word “dentist”. I was in a situation where I could not get to the dentist in a timely manner and was desperately searching for relief. So desperate that I even “GOOGLED” options to help alleviate my tooth pain. I landed on some random link suggesting that I mix up a paste of baking soda and peppermint essential oil to apply to my aching tooth. Off I went to the local big box store in search of these mystery ingredients that would move mountains, or in my case at least soothe the aching tooth that really needed to be evicted.
While at the store, I picked up the first essential oil I could find. To be honest there was really only one brand. I got what I needed and headed home. I quickly read over the post again, mixed the oil and baking soda and packed it on my aching tooth. And do you know what happened next?
It burned! O. M. G. it BURNED! My mouth was in a mixed state of pain from the abscessed tooth itself and now what ever God awful concoction I just packed in it. What could I do ?!? I can’t squirt it with water to clean it out. Just brushing my teeth on that side was painful enough. I couldn’t poke at it. That would have made it worse! As the burning got worse and the new sensations of pain on every nerve ending that was left really started to set in, I did the only thing I could do. I cried. And then, I sucked up all fears of the dentist that I had ever faced and desperately called the emergency dentist line and begged for help.
When I mumbled to the dentist what I had done, she hung her head low shaking it while trying not to giggle. Then, she asked me why on earth I had thought that putting random essential oils in my mouth was a good idea. As I sat there drooling on myself in that blue dentist chair, I faced a state of confusion. What was so bad about what I did? Peppermint essential oil is all over the internet with people spouting its praises for all types of uses. Why was the dentist laughing at my decision?
The truth is that I had unknowingly put aromatherapy grade essential oils IN MY MOUTH. Why is this a bad thing? It is a bad thing because not all essential oils are made to be put in or on your body. Not to mention, the brand I had purchased was not backed by quality seals. I didn’t know and apparently neither did this random Google post that I had read in the first place.
After my tooth was extracted and I humbly mumbled “thank you” to my dentist, I went home in search of legitimate research and information about essential oils. Like, REAL information. Information on where the essential oil came from. Where it was made. What it was made of. What quality standards backed up the brands claims.
Things you should know about essential oils. There are 3 ways to use essential oils:
Aromatically – Meaning you are meant to smell it only. You can drop a few drops in to water and diffuse it. You can put a few drops on a cotton ball or wooden clothes pin and put in an area that needs a fresh smell.
Topically – Meaning you can use it directly kind of like massage oil (however be careful doing this as most oils are meant to be mixed with a carrier oil so they don’t burn you).
Internally – Meaning you can ingest it. I only trust the Young Living Vitality line when considering to ingest any type of essential oil.
I needed to know all of the information. A friend that I had begrudgingly shared my tooth story with at a social gathering even dropped her jaw dropped when she found out what types of oils I had used. That is when I found Young Living (Thank you, Laura).
Now, Young Living essential oils can be found throughout my home for uses in my diffuser, in my kitchen for cooking and even in my car in a mini USB diffuser. And guess what? I HAVE been back to the dentist and was able to sit through a whole cleaning unmedicated thanks to the Young Living essential oil blend called Stress Away.
That is my Young Living story and now that I have discovered its many uses, Young Living essential oils are here to stay in both my life and in my kitchen.
